Top of the Table

Hello...I'm back from my travels. We were only away a couple of days, but managed to pack a lot in and get our money's worth from our Scottish NT membership. Forgive me but I'm easing my way in gently with my first post today.

This glorious table is 500 years old, but is referred to as "the board" in a 16th century inventory of Little Moreton Hall. Back in the day most people would have sat on benches running along each side of it. Unless you were an important bod.....then you got to sit on a chair at one end.....

thereby making you head of the board! I now wonder if this is where the term "chairman" originates from? It's only my pet theory, but would seem to be a logical follow on.

  2. It is where the term "chairman of the board" comes from (so we were told at Moseley Old Hall) - it's also behind "treading the boards" as people would use the unlaid dining table for dancing and performing on. xxx
