It appears politicians carping at one another is nothing new. Here is a fine example of a rather vitriolic exchange between Gladstone and Disraeli.

G to D " Sir, you will probably die by the hangman's noose or a vile disease."

In response D to G " Sir, that depends whether I embrace your principles or your mistress."
