Nowadays this rather sorry looking oak sits forlornly on the corner of a roundabout with traffic rushing past on the outskirts of Worthing. However, it was once the centre of all sorts of shenanigans and would have some stories to tell. This is the "Broadwater Oak" and it's a true survivor. The information board tells you everything you need to know....💀💀👻

Hopefully, modern traffic rushing past its location will protect the folkloric tree from vandals. Here in the States an historic tree in a changing neighborhood would soon be covered in paint and trash. Some rural populations do cherish isolated "treaty trees", the mighty oaks and sycamores that once served as outdoor meeting halls.
ReplyDeleteIt's quite tucked away and so I don't think it really draws much attention apart from people like me! Arilx
DeleteThis reminded me...I wanted to talk to the library about having a story tree program.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds a fabulous idea Debby. Arilx
DeleteOooh, that is exciting! I am glad the tree is out of the way of hooligans!x
