Mystery Object


Another post in an occasional series. Does anyone fancy having a go at guessing what this blue glass bottle was used for. Please feel free to comment below and I'll put the answer up tomorrow. 


Well a couple of you were spot on. Here's the official blurb about it from Calke Abbey where I saw it.


  1. My first thought was that it was a glass fire extinguisher but it looks like it has a metal band round the middle so I'm not too sure.

  2. Laudanum. It’s a wild guess, based on my recollection of blue glass being used for medicine bottles.

  3. I'm sure I'm wrong, but was it for medicine?

  4. Looks like a perfume bottle - we would never have guessed a fire (extinguishing) bomb.

  5. Something to do with poison due to the ribbing. x

  6. I missed the chance but my first thought was poisonnnnnn!!!
