The latest make on my make, bake and create challenge. I have been thinking about making these on and off for ages. Rummaging through my book looking for something else I came upon a recipe for them. With everything already in store I took the hint. They tasted quite moreish [very peppery], but needed a lot more water to bring the dough together than the instructions said. Ah well I shall know for next time. Another thing for me to make rather than buy in a packet.

They look good - I've tried oatcakes once but without a lot of success - what recipe did you use?
ReplyDelete200g porridge oats, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp cracked black pepper, 50ml oil, little boiling water
DeleteTake half of the oats, salt and pepper and whizz in a blender until fairly fine then tip into a bowl. Add the other half of the oats and stir. Add the oil, mix and then add 2 -3 tbsp water to make a soft malleable dough. Roll out gently on a lightly floured board until 5mm thick and then cut into 6 cm rounds. Bake on a greased tray at 160C for 15 mins until lightly browned and crisp.
NB I found the recipe needed lots more water than stated to make the dough stick together so you’ll need to experiment a bit. My lot have declared that there is too much pepper...I meanwhile was happy with the amount! Arilx
Thanks Aril
DeleteThe worst disappointment we had (in buying something as a treat) was a package of oatcakes. Dull as eating hard cardboard! One of the nicest treats was the oatcake pancakes they sell near Stoke on Trent, a long griddle where they are cooked and then your choice of toppingsn both sweet and savoury. We found the best were those rolled around grated cheese.
ReplyDeleteThey can be a bit grim and definitely need something in them or on them to pep them up imho. The Stoke ones sound delicious!

Oooh, I would like to try making these!
ReplyDeleteI'm no great shakes in the kitchen, but they didn't even defeat me so they definitely weren't too much of a horror to make.
