Have you ever seen the shishi-odori? For many years I was an onstage announcer for Minyo dancers. When they performed with the Imperial dance troupe (on a rug from the Imperial palace!), I had the honor of being the prop girl who held the chief dancer's face towel and, for a very few seconds, his mask. Their antlers and masks were actually relics and smelled of incense. Old ways, indeed.
