Isn't it a tad frustrating when you see something you think you'd really enjoy and you can't manage it for a multitude of reason...
I imagine it was the only time that stone cutters were given carte blanche. They certainly amused themselves.
ReplyDeleteYou would think so but it's more likely that they were actually commissioned. The medieval mind seems quite insane when seen from our modern perspective but these were god fearing folk who also completely believed in evil spirits, dragons etc.

The grotesque detail is quite beautiful (in an ugly sort of way) stuff of medieval nightmares I suspect :)
