Holly and No Ivy
This huge Winter decoration is above the fireplace in Bayleaf at the Weald and Downland Museum. As the smoke rises it gently goes round and round. It used to be traditional to keep all the greenery up for 40 days until Candlemas when it would then be burnt otherwise bad luck would surely follow. Apologies for the lack of ivy.

ReplyDeleteThanks for that tit-bit of information, which I definitely didn't know. take care.
ReplyDeleteIt is too cold to cut the ivy here and the birds have devoured every berry on the holly tree but we have hardly any snow!
ReplyDeleteNo ivy - no problem - added story is excellent!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about the tradition to keep greenery for forty days, thanks for telling us about that. x
